How market holidays affect options traders

NSE and BSE follow a published trading holiday calendar each year, aligned with national and festival holidays. On a trading holiday the equity, F&O and currency derivatives segments are closed — there is no trading, no settlement and no data feed.

What changes around a holiday

  • Expiry dates shift. When a weekly or monthly expiry falls on a holiday, the contract expires on the previous trading day.
  • Thin sessions before and after. The day before a long weekend often sees lower participation and choppy moves.
  • Global moves over the break. Positions held across a holiday carry overnight and event risk from global markets that trade while India is closed.

Automated trading on holidays

Well-behaved trading systems check the exchange calendar and market status before placing orders. HT Bot's scheduler only runs on market days and uses the same holiday calendar shown here — you can see live market status any time on the status page.

Common questions

Do NSE and BSE have the same holidays?
Almost always. Both exchanges publish nearly identical equity market holiday lists each year. Occasional differences exist for special sessions or segment-specific closures.
Are there special trading sessions on holidays?
Exchanges sometimes hold a special muhurat trading session on Diwali. It typically runs for about an hour in the evening and is announced separately, outside the regular holiday list.
What happens to my open position on a holiday?
HT Bot trades intraday only and closes positions the same day, so positions are not carried across holidays. If you trade manually and carry positions, check the expiry shift rules before a holiday.
Is this calendar official?
The dates here are maintained from exchange holiday announcements for planning purposes. Always confirm the official list published by NSE and BSE before making trading decisions.
