Nifty weekly expiry in one paragraph
Nifty 50 weekly options expire every Thursday (monthly contracts on the last Thursday). Because the weekly contract lives for only five sessions, its premium is almost entirely time value on day one and almost entirely intrinsic value on expiry afternoon. The strategy question is therefore not "will Nifty go up" but "is the move I expect larger than the time value I am paying for?"
The three forces you are trading against
- Theta — the premium you paid decays every day, fastest in the last two sessions. A directionally correct trade can still lose if it takes too long to happen.
- Implied volatility — premiums inflate before events (budget, RBI policy, US CPI, election results) and deflate after them. Buying before an event means paying for the crowd's expectation.
- Range compression — Nifty spends most weeks inside a 300–500 point band. A structure that needs a 700-point week needs a specific week, not a typical one.
Structures that fit a weekly cycle
| Structure | When it fits | What kills it |
|---|---|---|
| Long CE / PE (Monday–Tuesday) | You expect a directional move early in the week, with enough time value left to be right | Entering Thursday morning: almost no time left, maximum gamma both ways |
| Debit spread | A measured move with a defined target | Profit cap on a week that trends further than expected |
| Credit spread | You expect the index to stay away from a strike | A gap through the short leg; the loss grows faster than the credit collected |
| Iron condor | A range week with a known event calendar | Event weeks and trend days; the body gets breached on both sides of the week |
| Calendar (weekly vs monthly) | You expect the weekly to decay faster than the monthly | Liquidity in the far leg and a sharp move that hits the short weekly |
Timing inside the week
Monday and Tuesday belong to directional trades: there is enough time value left for a move to pay. Wednesday is the transition day — premium is cheap but decay is steep, so the same view needs a faster move. Thursday is a completely different instrument: near-zero time value, extreme gamma, and liquidity that thins in the last hour.
A useful rule: if your thesis needs three days, do not buy it on Wednesday. You are paying for speed and the market is not obliged to provide it.
Sizing a weekly position
- Set the rupee loss that ends your week — not just the day.
- Convert it into lots using the stop distance in premium points, then round down.
- Check that the position still makes sense after charges: STT on the sell side, exchange charges, brokerage and GST are a larger share of a small premium.
- Re-check on Wednesday. The same lots risk a different amount once theta has done its work.
The position size calculator and the net P&L calculator cover steps two and three.
Automating a weekly cycle
A weekly options mandate is mostly a calendar problem: enter early in the week, avoid holding a decaying long into Wednesday, and never carry a position into expiry afternoon by accident. HT Bot enforces the parts that are easy to forget — a holding-time limit closes a position that has stopped working, the daily and per-script budgets cap the week's exposure, and Safe Mode stops new entries once the profit or loss target is reached.

Common weekly-expiry mistakes
- Buying on Thursday morning because premiums "look cheap" — they are cheap because there is no time left.
- Holding a losing long through Wednesday hoping for a bounce, while theta removes the possibility.
- Selling a weekly strangle without a hedge and calling the credit "income".
- Sizing in lots rather than in risk, then discovering the risk on the day the index gaps.
Frequently asked questions
Which day is Nifty weekly expiry?
Nifty 50 weekly contracts expire on Thursday, with the monthly contract expiring on the last Thursday of the month. Exchanges have changed expiry days before, so confirm the schedule on the NSE contract note before trading a weekly.
Is it better to buy or sell weekly options?
They are different risk profiles rather than better or worse. Buying caps the loss at the premium but fights theta; selling collects theta but carries an uncapped loss unless hedged. Size by the loss you can survive.
When should I enter a weekly options trade?
Early in the week if your thesis needs time, because Monday and Tuesday still hold enough time value for a move to pay. Buying on Thursday morning means paying for speed the market may not provide.
